Suicide Bomb Attack on School Bus in Pakistan: 5 Dead, Including 3 Children
A tragic suicide bombing targeted a school bus in Pakistan’s Balochistan province on Wednesday, resulting in the deaths of five individuals, including three schoolchildren. The attack, which occurred in the restive Qilla Saifullah district, has once again highlighted the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country.
According to local authorities, the school bus was transporting children to a military-run school located in a remote mountainous area of the district. As the bus made its way through a narrow and hilly stretch, a suicide bomber on foot approached the vehicle and detonated an explosive device near its side.
The powerful blast caused severe damage to the vehicle and led to the immediate deaths of three children and two other adults, one of whom was the bus driver. The explosion also injured at least 38 other individuals, many of whom are in critical condition and have been rushed to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment.
Medical officials at the district hospital reported that the injured included multiple schoolchildren with shrapnel wounds and trauma-related injuries. Several of the victims have been transferred to larger facilities in Quetta due to the severity of their condition.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack as of yet. However, the region has seen frequent attacks by insurgent groups, including Baloch separatist organizations and Islamist militants. These groups have often targeted military personnel and infrastructure, but attacks directly targeting schoolchildren remain rare and have sparked widespread condemnation.
Security forces have since cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to identify any accomplices or remnants of the attack cell responsible. Authorities suspect that the attack may have been aimed at sending a political message, given the association of the school with the military.
The Prime Minister of Pakistan issued a strong statement condemning the attack, calling it “an inhuman act of terror against innocent children.” He vowed that those behind the attack would be brought to justice and that measures would be intensified to protect educational institutions across the country.
The incident has also drawn international condemnation. A spokesperson for the United Nations described the attack as a “gross violation of children’s rights and humanitarian norms.” Human rights groups have urged the Pakistani government to ensure the safety of children and educational facilities, especially in conflict-prone regions like Balochistan.
Balochistan, Pakistan’s largest yet least developed province, has long been the scene of a low-level insurgency. Armed groups have been demanding greater autonomy and a fairer share of the region’s natural resources. The Pakistani military has conducted numerous operations to suppress these groups, but attacks continue intermittently.
