Erik Ten Hag’s Bayer Leverkusen Not in Title-Contending Shape, Says Schick

Bayer Leverkusen forward Patrik Schick has expressed doubts over the team’s chances of defending their Bundesliga title, citing the departure of key players including Granit Xhaka, who recently joined Sunderland.

Schick raised concerns about the club’s ability to compete at the top level without proper reinforcements, following the exit of several major players.

Ten Hag Set for Major Overhaul Following Exit of Star Players

Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has taken charge of a much-changed Leverkusen side, succeeding Xabi Alonso, who left the role to take over as Real Madrid’s head coach.

The latest setback came with Granit Xhaka’s transfer to English Premier League club Sunderland. Xhaka was considered a central figure in Leverkusen’s midfield setup.

Xhaka’s exit adds to a growing list of key players leaving the club, such as Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, and Jonathan Tah — all of whom played vital roles in Leverkusen’s historic double-winning 2024 season.

“We’re Not in a Condition to Compete for the Title”

In an interaction with Sky Sport Germany, Schick — who netted 27 goals in 45 appearances last season — did not hide his disappointment with the team’s current condition.

“We’ve lost our most crucial players, and it definitely hurts,” said the Czech striker.

“At this point, we’re hoping to bring in a few quality signings because, as things stand, we’re not in a state where we can challenge for the title.”

He especially mentioned Florian Wirtz as the attacking teammate he would miss the most.

“He had exceptional talent — it’s very rare to find someone like him,” Schick commented.

However, he felt that Granit Xhaka’s departure would affect the squad the most.

“He was the leader — the most experienced player in the dressing room,” he added.

So far, Leverkusen have made a few additions to the squad, including Malik Tillman from PSV Eindhoven, Jarell Quansah from Liverpool, and goalkeeper Mark Flekken from Brentford.
