Wirtz’s Suggestion to Join Bayern? Luis Díaz Acknowledges Ex-Leverkusen Star for Influencing Munich Switch
Luis Díaz has acknowledged that former Liverpool teammate Florian Wirtz had a significant influence in convincing him to make the switch to Bayern Munich, as the Colombian international was formally introduced by the Bundesliga champions on Thursday.
The German club is believed to have paid up to €75 million (approximately ₹750 crore) for the 28-year-old winger, who has inked a deal that runs till 2029.
Though Díaz and Wirtz shared only a short stint together at Liverpool, the Colombian footballer said their chats played a role in shaping his decision to join Bayern.
“I spoke to Florian on a few occasions, and he told me that the Bundesliga is very intense—quite similar to the Premier League,” Díaz said during his official presentation. “He mentioned it’s very physical, the stadiums are always packed, and that I’d enjoy playing here. He wished me the best. I appreciate that.”
Wirtz, who was pivotal in Bayer Leverkusen’s domestic double triumph last season, made a surprise move to Liverpool in June, just weeks before Díaz made the switch from the English champions to the German side.
Not Bothered About Transfer Fee
With this move, Díaz becomes Bayern’s third costliest signing in the club’s history, behind only Harry Kane (€95 million) and Lucas Hernandez (€80 million). However, the Colombian brushed aside any concerns regarding the sizeable fee.
“I can’t really say whether I’m worth €70 million,” he remarked. “What matters most to me is settling in here as soon as possible.”
Díaz arrives at Bayern after a successful spell at Liverpool, where he won the Premier League, FA Cup, and two League Cups over three-and-a-half years at Anfield.
In the previous season, he featured in 50 games across competitions, netting 17 goals and contributing eight assists as Liverpool, under new manager Arne Slot, secured their 20th English league title—matching a long-standing record.
