Encounter Breaks Out Between Militants, Security Forces in J&K’s Kulgam

An encounter broke out between militants and security personnel in the Akhal Devsar area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Friday.

According to officials, two to three militants, suspected to be foreign nationals, are possibly involved in a gunfight with the forces.

A combined operation was launched by the Indian Army, CRPF, and the Jammu and Kashmir Police.

The Kashmir Zone Police confirmed on its X account that an encounter has started in the Akhal region of Kulgam.

Security forces began a cordon and search operation in the forested Akhal area after receiving specific intelligence regarding the presence of militants there, a police official said, as reported by news agency PTI.

The search operation turned into a firefight when the hiding militants opened fire on the forces, who responded accordingly, he said.

The official added that the cordon is being tightened, and extra reinforcements have been deployed in the area.

Earlier this week, the Indian Army, CRPF, and Jammu and Kashmir Police eliminated three militants involved in the Pahalgam terror attack — Suleiman alias Faizal Jat, Jibran, and Hamza Afghani — in Srinagar under Operation Mahadev.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah informed Parliament that the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) report of the cartridges recovered from Pahalgam matched the M9 pistol and two AK-47 rifles seized from Dachigam. The weapons were sent for forensic analysis in Chandigarh to verify the evidence from Pahalgam.
