Army Officer Assaults SpiceJet Staff Over Cabin Luggage Fee at Srinagar Airport; One Employee Unconscious
A shocking incident unfolded at Srinagar airport on July 26, where a senior Army officer allegedly physically assaulted SpiceJet staff members during a dispute over excess cabin baggage charges.
According to SpiceJet, the officer—identified as a Lieutenant Colonel currently stationed at the High Altitude Warfare School in Gulmarg—reportedly reacted violently when informed about having to pay extra for luggage that exceeded the cabin baggage limit while boarding flight SG-386 to Delhi.
In the altercation that followed, four airline staff were injured, with one employee rendered unconscious. Others suffered serious injuries, including a fractured spine and jaw damage. The entire incident was caught on camera and widely shared on social media, triggering public outrage and demands for strict action.
The airline has confirmed the filing of an FIR and has announced a no-fly ban on the officer. “SpiceJet strongly condemns this inhumane attack. We are cooperating fully with law enforcement and are taking appropriate legal measures,” the airline said in an official statement.
Army Responds to the Incident
In response to the viral video and public concerns, an Indian Army spokesperson told CNN-News18: “The matter has come to our attention. We are awaiting the findings of the ongoing investigation.”
“The Indian Army holds discipline and mutual respect in all civilian spaces in high regard and remains committed to these principles,” the official added.
The incident has reignited conversations around passenger conduct, airline staff safety, and the importance of accountability—regardless of status or position.
