Indian Army Reaffirms ‘Strict Discipline Standards’ After Officer Assaults SpiceJet Staff
The Indian Army issued a response on Sunday, emphasising its commitment to maintaining the highest discipline standards, following an FIR filed against a senior Army officer accused of physically assaulting four SpiceJet employees at Srinagar airport last week.
“The incident involving an alleged scuffle between an Army official and airline personnel at Srinagar Airport on 26 July has come to the Indian Army’s notice. The Indian Army is dedicated to upholding the highest levels of discipline and behaviour, and treats all complaints seriously. Full support is being extended to the authorities for the investigation,” the Army said in an official note.
A heated confrontation took place at Srinagar airport on July 26, when the officer allegedly attacked multiple staff members of SpiceJet after refusing to pay charges for excess cabin baggage, as confirmed by the airline in a statement.
The officer, a Lieutenant Colonel currently serving at the High Altitude Warfare School in Gulmarg, reportedly became aggressive when informed by airline staff about the charges for baggage that exceeded cabin limits.
The incident took place during the boarding procedure for SpiceJet flight SG-386 to Delhi. SpiceJet has lodged a police complaint against the Army officer, accusing him of a “murderous attack”.
As per the FIR, the officer’s assault was described as “unprovoked”, “violent”, and “abusive”, resulting in one staffer suffering a spinal fracture and another sustaining a jaw injury. SpiceJet confirmed filing the FIR with local law enforcement and said it had initiated proceedings to list the officer under India’s no-fly list.
The FIR has been filed under Sections 115(2), 126(2), 351(2), and 131 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which cover offences such as voluntarily causing harm, unlawful restraint, intimidation, and use of criminal force or assault.
The entire episode, captured on video, has been widely circulated across social media, drawing strong public reaction. The visuals have led to widespread condemnation, with many demanding prompt action and accountability from concerned authorities.
