‘Ek Chutki Sindoor Ki Keemat…’: Delhi CM Rekha Gupta’s ‘Bollywood-style’ Jibe at Jaya Bachchan
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday took a dig at Bollywood actor and Rajya Sabha MP Jaya Bachchan for raising objections over the naming of Operation Sindoor—India’s military response to the Pahalgam terror attack.
While addressing the Delhi Legislative Assembly during a debate on Operation Sindoor and Operation Mahadev, CM Gupta took a sarcastic swipe at Jaya Bachchan and remarked, “She questioned why the operation was named Sindoor. I’ll reply with a movie dialogue – ‘Ek chutki sindoor ki keemat aap kya jano Jaya Madam? Aap toh filmon ki duniya jaanti hain, desh ki haqeeqat nahi’ (What would you know about the value of a pinch of sindoor, Jaya Madam? You know the world of cinema, not the ground realities of the nation).”
She then strongly criticised the Opposition parties, alleging they were aligned with anti-national forces and lacked patriotism.
“These people don’t love Bharat, they love anti-national elements because they see a reflection of themselves in them. They’ve named themselves ‘INDIA’, but when they speak, it sounds like they are speaking on behalf of Pakistan,” Gupta charged.
She also accused several Opposition leaders of casting doubts on the legitimacy of Operation Sindoor, even in Parliament.
“They don’t have faith in their own Army or Prime Minister, but they believe in foreign powers,” she said.
CM Gupta went on to laud Prime Minister Narendra Modi for India’s forceful counterstrike after the Pahalgam incident.
“Operation Sindoor was a fitting response to Pakistan after the brutal assault in Pahalgam, where several women lost their loved ones,” she said.
She added,
“PM Modi has played a crucial role in upholding the dignity of our sisters.”
She paid her respects to the bravery and dedication of the armed forces and said that under PM Modi’s leadership, the country has found a guardian who acts like
“a brave father, a caring brother, and a determined national leader.”
What Did Jaya Bachchan Say?
Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan stirred controversy after she questioned the name ‘Operation Sindoor’, saying it was insensitive, as the attack had “wiped off the sindoor” of many women who lost their husbands in the April 22 tragedy.
“I would like to compliment you on your scriptwriters. You give these operations such dramatic names. Why name it Sindoor? The sindoor is gone—so many women became widows,” she said.
Her remarks were met with interruptions from members of the ruling alliance.
The Pahalgam Attack
One of the deadliest terror strikes in Jammu and Kashmir, the April 22 attack saw Lashkar-linked militants open fire on a group of tourists in Pahalgam’s Baisaran meadow, killing at least 26 people, including some foreign nationals, and injuring several others. The Resistance Front (TRF), a Lashkar-e-Taiba proxy, claimed responsibility for the assault.
India retaliated on May 7 through Operation Sindoor, in which nine terror camps across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir were bombed in pre-dawn air raids, killing over 100 militants, according to official estimates. The operation triggered four days of intense cross-border exchanges, involving fighter aircraft, missiles, and heavy artillery fire.
