New Income Tax Bill with 285 Amendments to be Introduced in Lok Sabha on Monday: Rijiju

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Saturday confirmed that Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the new Income Tax Bill in the Lok Sabha on Monday. The revised bill incorporates all 285 amendments recommended by the Select Committee and accepted by the government.

Rijiju’s statement comes after concerns in some media reports following the withdrawal of the earlier Income Tax Bill from the Lok Sabha on Friday. Dismissing fears that the previous draft and months of work would be discarded, he clarified that the reintroduction is a standard parliamentary procedure when amendments are substantial.

“It is a normal convention that when a Select Committee submits a report with several accepted amendments, the earlier bill is withdrawn and a revised version is introduced for smoother passage,” he explained.

The Select Committee, chaired by BJP MP Baijayant Panda, had suggested 285 changes to the bill. Rijiju noted that introducing each amendment individually would have been cumbersome, hence the decision to table a fresh draft.

He assured that the new bill will retain the essence of the earlier version while reflecting the extensive work and inputs gathered over the past six months.
