Centre Sanctions Phase-1B of Lucknow Metro Project at a Cost of Rs 5,801 Crore
The Union Cabinet on Tuesday gave its approval for Phase-1B of the Lucknow Metro project, covering a corridor length of 11.165 km, with an estimated cost of Rs 5,801 crore, informed Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
As per the government, once Phase-1B becomes operational, Lucknow will boast a total Metro rail network of 34 km. The Cabinet meeting was presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In an official statement, the government highlighted that Phase-1B of the Lucknow Metro Rail Project marks a significant milestone in the development of the city’s infrastructure, representing a major extension of the Metro network in the state capital.
This new corridor will add around 11.165 km of Metro lines featuring 12 stations — seven underground and five elevated — thereby enhancing public transport connectivity in some of the oldest and most densely populated parts of the city, which currently face inadequate transit options.
The phase aims to seamlessly connect key areas of Old Lucknow, including important commercial centres like Aminabad, Yahiyaganj, Pandeyganj, and Chowk.
It will also link other important zones such as King George’s Medical University (Medical College) and major tourist landmarks including Bara Imambara, Chota Imambara, Bhool Bhulaiya, Clock Tower, and Rumi Darwaza, along with the city’s famed culinary hotspots, known for their rich and historic food culture.
By integrating these vital areas into the Metro network, Phase-1B is expected to not only improve connectivity but also boost economic activity, promote tourism, and ease urban mobility for both residents and visitors, the statement added.
The project’s Phase-1B promises better connectivity, easing of traffic congestion, environmental benefits, economic upliftment, and an overall improved quality of life.
Addressing urban challenges and laying the groundwork for future growth, Phase-1B is set to play a pivotal role in shaping Lucknow’s development path and sustainability, the government said.
