McLaren to Auction Unreleased Car in Landmark Move
In an unprecedented step, McLaren has announced it will auction one of its 2026 Formula 1 cars before the vehicle has even made its racing debut.
The British racing outfit has listed three chassis for sale in a special RM Sotheby’s auction scheduled for December 5, just before the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. McLaren CEO Zak Brown described the event as a historic first — never before has a future F1 car been sold prior to its public unveiling.
“This is a rare chance to own a true piece of motorsport history — to bid on a car that will have competed before its official reveal,” Brown said. “The Triple Crown remains a key part of our legacy, and we’re intent on reclaiming it as we gear up for our 2027 World Endurance Championship entry. These cars also come with exclusive VIP access to our team and trackside action.”
Alongside the F1 car, McLaren will also auction a 2026 Arrow McLaren IndyCar — set to be driven by Mexican racer Pato O’Ward at the Indianapolis 500 — and the brand’s first-ever 2027 World Endurance Hypercar, destined for the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
The 2026 F1 model, still unnamed, will usher in a new era for the sport with major updates to its technical and engine regulations. The winning bidder will not take delivery until 2028 but will be provided with a 2025 show car on lease in the meantime. The IndyCar and Hypercar will be delivered after their respective racing seasons conclude.
