Dahi Handi: Maharashtra Dy CM Eknath Shinde Extends Wishes As State Prepares For Festive Celebrations
Maharashtra is gearing up for grand Dahi Handi celebrations today, marking the festival of Janmashtami, which commemorates the birth of Lord Krishna.
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde extended his greetings to the people of the state, calling the occasion a symbol of “team spirit, devotion and Maharashtra’s rich cultural heritage.”
The festival recreates Lord Krishna’s childhood pastime of stealing butter. A clay pot (handi) filled with curd, butter or other dairy items is hung high up, while groups of youngsters, known as Govindas, form tall human pyramids to break it.
Over the years, Dahi Handi has transformed into a competitive spectacle, with teams competing for attractive prize money amidst loud music, cheering crowds and a vibrant atmosphere.
Adding an international flavour this year, a team of Spanish castellers has also arrived in Maharashtra to participate in the Dahi Handi Mahotsav, showcasing the cultural connect between India and Spain.
