Zelenskyy Speaks to Trump After Alaska Talks: ‘We Support US-Ukraine-Russia Trilateral Proposal’

Following the high-stakes Alaska summit between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he held a “long and substantive conversation” with the US president, expressing support for a trilateral meeting involving Ukraine, the USA, and Russia.

Zelenskyy said the discussion began as a one-on-one exchange before European leaders joined. The call lasted over 90 minutes, with about an hour devoted to bilateral talks with Trump.

“We support President Trump’s proposal for a trilateral meeting between Ukraine, the USA, and Russia. Ukraine emphasises that key issues can be discussed at the level of leaders, and a trilateral format is suitable for this,” Zelenskyy said in an official statement posted on X.

He added that Ukraine remains committed to working fully to achieve peace, noting that Trump briefed him on his meeting with Putin and the key points discussed. Zelenskyy also underlined that America’s strength plays an important role in shaping the situation.

Zelenskyy to Visit US

Zelenskyy announced his US visit for the coming Monday, saying he will meet President Trump in Washington, DC, “to discuss all details regarding ending the killing and the war.” He added: “I am grateful for the invitation.”

“It is important that Europeans are involved at every stage to ensure reliable security guarantees together with America. We also discussed positive signals from the American side regarding participation in guaranteeing Ukraine’s security. We continue to coordinate our positions with all partners. I thank everyone who is helping,” Zelenskyy said.

During Zelenskyy’s previous White House visit, tensions arose when Trump and Vice President JD Vance criticised the Ukrainian leader over the war, accusing him of lacking gratitude after he challenged Vance on diplomacy with Putin. The heated Oval Office exchange, broadcast globally, led to the remainder of Zelenskyy’s visit being cancelled and raised doubts over the extent of US support for Ukraine in its fight against Russia’s 2022 invasion.

Alaska Summit

Trump and Putin held their first face-to-face meeting in years in Alaska on Friday to discuss resolving the Ukraine conflict.

After nearly three hours of discussions with top aides, both leaders issued brief statements but declined to take questions from the press, an unusual move for Trump.

“We had an extremely productive meeting, and many points were agreed to,” Trump said. “There are just a very few that are left; some are not that significant, one is probably the most significant.”

Trump entered the talks aiming to secure an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine and a commitment from Putin to meet directly with Zelenskyy. However, the summit ended without any decision to pause the ongoing conflict and concluded with an unexpected invitation for Trump to continue discussions in Moscow.

Trump later told Fox News that the responsibility to turn the Alaska summit into progress now rests with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
