“IT Hub City” turns into a garbage city: Bengaluru residents unhappy with state government

The worsening sanitation crisis in Bengaluru has become a major talking point. Several people have raised continuous allegations against the city administration and the state government.

Known as India’s IT Hub and the Silicon Valley of India, Bengaluru has seen rapid growth in the technology sector, providing jobs to lakhs of youngsters. With luxurious buildings, huge malls, metro rail services, and entertainment hubs, the city has transformed to match global standards.

On the other hand, Bengaluru is also infamous for heavy traffic congestion, poor roads, and major areas being surrounded by garbage. Recently, Biocon founder Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw’s post on X (formerly Twitter) has brought this issue into the spotlight.

She alleged that due to public negligence and the inefficiency of civic administration, Bengaluru is turning into a dirty city. She urged citizens to refrain from littering in public spaces and to maintain cleanliness. She also stressed the need to provide proper equipment to sanitation workers and called on officials to take immediate action.

Following her post, many netizens began criticizing the unhygienic conditions in Bengaluru. They listed areas in poor condition — for example, one user pointed out that the stretch from Banashankari to Kathirenahalli near the metro station is filled with garbage, while another claimed that stormwater drains are not cleaned regularly.

At one point, the criticism shifted towards the state government. Netizens alleged that collected waste is not properly recycled and that waste management has completely failed. Despite being one of the highest tax-paying cities in India, Bengaluru is allegedly being neglected by its authorities. Even major stretches like the Outer Ring Road reportedly lack proper footpaths.

In this context, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar recently remarked that “even Delhi’s main roads are in bad condition,” in response to questions about Bengaluru’s poor roads. His statement has drawn further criticism, with netizens accusing him of making careless comments instead of addressing the issue.
