India’s Twitter managing director has been sued for splitting India from a map and showing Kashmir as a separate country. Meanwhile, the federal government is furious over the matter, and Twitter has removed the controversial map.
A new controversy has erupted over a map on Twitter showing Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh as a country other than a part of India. Jammu & Kashmir was shown as a separate country in the Tweep Life section of the Twitter site.
This caused a great deal of controversy on Twitter. Many people have registered their protests against the move by Twitter. Twitter has since removed the controversial upgrade.
Meanwhile, Manish Maheswari, managing director of Twitter India, has been charged in Uttar Pradesh with displaying a false map of India on his website under Section 505 (2) of the IPC and Section 74 of the ID (Amendment) Act 2008. Bulandshahr police have registered a case following a complaint lodged by a Bajrang Dal administrator.
This is not the first time Twitter has misrepresented a map of India. In October last year, Twitter showed the Ladakh Union Territory as part of China. The federal government strongly condemned the incident and sent a notice to Twitter CEO Jake Dorsey. It is noteworthy that Twitter has since corrected its mistake.
