The federal government has told the Supreme Court that it cannot provide Rs 4 lakh compensation under the Disaster Management Act for those killed by corona.
A public interest litigation was filed in the Supreme Court seeking financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of the victims. On May 24, the judges ordered the federal government to respond.
According to an 183-page affidavit filed by the federal government in connection with the case, the temple was unable to pay compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the families of the victims. The Central and State Governments have been providing assistance to the victims through various schemes. Over the past year, federal and state governments have spent a lot of government money to control the epidemic. So there is a lack of funding.
The total allocation of the State Disaster Relief Fund to all the states for the year 2021-22 is Rs.22,184 crore. The government epidemic has killed more than 3.85 lakh lives. This number will increase further. The death toll from the disaster has never been higher.
Therefore, if the compensation of Rs 4 lakh per person is to be provided, the entire state disaster relief fund should also be utilized. The additional financial burden of providing compensation will reduce funding for health and wellness programs. Thus the Central Government has stated in that confession.
