The pmk has asked the Tamil Nadu government not to allow ONGC to extract hydrocarbons in Ariyalur. Youth leader Anbumani Ramadhas has issued a statement emphasizing this. It is shocking that ONGC has applied to the Government of Tamil Nadu for permission to construct wells for extracting hydrocarbons at 10 locations in the Ariyalur district of Tamil Nadu. The plan to desert the Ariyalur district, which is part of the Cauvery Irrigation Areas, is reprehensible.
ONGC’s plan to set up hydrocarbon wells in Ariyalur district is not new. ONGC has been working on this for the last 4 years. ONGC has applied to the Tamil Nadu government for environmental clearance for 10 projects, citing the federal government’s approval that hydrocarbon projects can now be licensed without holding consultations, after all attempts have failed.
In addition, ONGC is pushing to build hydrocarbon wells in more than 100 locations in the Cauvery Irrigation Districts alone. Those efforts by ONGC must be firmly thwarted. The Cauvery Irrigation Districts are the rice bowl of Tamil Nadu. ONGC, which has already set up more than 200 crude oil wells in those areas, should not repeatedly implement hydrocarbon projects on farmland and turn the three-pronged Cauvery Basin into a desert.
Most parts of the Cauvery Irrigation Districts have been included in the Cauvery Protected Agricultural Zone Act passed by the Government of Tamil Nadu last year. ONGC is trying to enter the Cauvery Basin through Ariyalur district, which is not included in the zone. The government should not allow this in any way.
The Government of Tamil Nadu should reject the permission filed by ONGC seeking environmental clearance for the implementation of hydrocarbon projects in Ariyalur district. In addition, the Government of Tamil Nadu should immediately amend the law to include Ariyalur, Karur and Trichy districts in the Cauvery Protected Agricultural Zone.
Thus he emphasizes in it.
