Jammu and Kashmir High Court Chief Justice N. Koteswar Singh and Madras High Court Acting Chief Justice R. Mahadevan have been appointed as judges of the Supreme Court.
The Central Government has approved the appointment of N. Koteswar Singh and R. Mahadevan as Supreme Court judges on the recommendation of the Supreme Collegium.
If both of them are sworn in, the number of Supreme Court judges will increase to 34. R. Mahadevan, who was promoted as the Madras High Court Judge in 2013, was appointed as the Chief Justice in charge last year. He has now been promoted as a judge of the Supreme Court.
Similarly, Koteeswar Singh, who has been serving as the Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court since February last year, is to be noted as the first person from Manipur to hold that position if he is sworn in as a Supreme Court judge.
