US votes against Ukraine’s resolution against Russia at UN

In an unexpected twist, the United States has voted against the resolution brought by Ukraine against Russia in the UN. The United States’ position in the UN, which sides with Russia, has shocked the international community, especially NATO countries. A news collection on why the United States is supporting Russia.

On February 24, 2022, Russia took military action against the Eastern European country of Ukraine. Following this, the Ukraine-Russia war began. The United States and NATO countries provided financial and military assistance to support Ukraine.

US President Trump is making serious efforts to end the war, 3 years after the war began. President Trump, who insisted that Russian President Putin and Ukrainian President Zelensky should hold talks, had said that the Ukrainian president was responsible for the war not ending.

He also strongly warned that Ukrainian President Zelensky, who acts like a dictator, should step down. In response, Zelensky had challenged that he would be ready to step down from his post if Ukraine was made a member of NATO.

In this situation, Ukraine brought a resolution in the UN Assembly, urging the immediate withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine. This resolution also urged a peaceful resolution of the war against Ukraine.

In the vote on the resolution brought by Ukraine, 93 countries voted in favor. 18 countries, including the United States, Russia, and Israel, voted against the resolution. 65 UN member states, including India, China, Brazil, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, the United Arab Emirates, and Vietnam, did not participate in the vote. The resolution was passed with even less support than previous resolutions against Russia.

Meanwhile, the United States also tabled a short competing resolution called “A Path to Peace.” 93 countries voted in favor of the resolution brought by the United States and 8 against. 73 countries, including India, abstained from voting. The competing resolution brought by the United States was adopted by the UN General Assembly with overwhelming support.

It is worth mentioning that earlier, the United States held direct talks with Russia in the Saudi Arabian capital Riyadh, bypassing Ukraine and NATO countries.

In this context, French President Emmanuel Macron, who met with President Trump at the White House, praised the progress of peace talks on the Ukraine war. He also stressed that any peace agreement on the Ukraine issue should be accompanied by security guarantees.

In the Russia-Ukraine ceasefire agreement, the two leaders agreed that European peacekeeping forces should be present in Ukraine. President Trump has also said that the United States and European countries should share the costs of maintaining peace in Ukraine. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who will meet with President Trump at the White House in the coming days, is expected to agree to this.

President Trump is taking a completely different position from the previous Joe Biden administration decisions against Russia. In the past 3 years, the United States has given Ukraine about $ 300 billion in war aid. President Trump, who has decided to cut unnecessary expenses, has stopped spending on Ukraine.

President Trump had said that Ukraine should return the funds provided by the United States for the war in Ukraine or give 50 percent of the mineral resources in Ukraine to the United States. It is said that Ukrainian President Zelensky, who will soon go to the White House to meet President Trump, will sign an agreement on mineral resources and unconditionally accept the US ceasefire agreement.

Meanwhile, the European Union and Britain have imposed new economic sanctions on Russia, the 16th round of sanctions imposed on Russia in the past 3 years.
