Additional S-400 air defense: Russia confirms to India – relationship to grow stronger!
India is in talks to buy more S-400 air defense systems from Russia, a senior Russian official has said. Here is a news report.
India and Russia have long had a long history of military cooperation. India is a major arms importer from Russia. In the last five years alone, Russia has accounted for 36 percent of the country’s total arms imports.
The two countries are jointly implementing several major military projects, including T-90 tanks, Brahmos missiles, INS Vikramaditya aircraft carrier, and AK-203 rifles.
The S-400 air defense system proved to be very successful in Operation Sindh. Following this, India has decided to buy more S-400 systems.
On August 9, the Indian Air Force shot down five Pakistani fighter jets in Operation Sindh against Pakistan, Air Chief Marshal A P Singh had said. He also called the Russian-made S-400 air defense system a “game-changer.”
The S-400 missile system is said to be more capable than the US Patriot missile defense system. The S-400 is a mobile air defense system. That is, it can be transported by road. Its special feature is that it can be used within 5 to 10 minutes of being ordered.
Earlier, India agreed to buy the S-400 air defense system from Russia to strengthen its air defense against the air threat from China and Pakistan. In 2018, India signed a $ 5.5 billion contract for this.
As per the contract for five S-400 sets, Russia has already delivered 3 sets of S-400. Russia has promised to deliver the remaining two sets by 2026-27.
Recently, at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Defence Ministers’ Conference in China, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh held high-level talks with Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov. The meeting reaffirmed the long-standing defence partnership between the two countries.
In this context, talks are currently underway between the two countries for the purchase of additional S-400 systems. This information was confirmed by Russia’s Head of Military-Technical Cooperation (Dmitry Shugaev).
The new talks for additional S-400 systems are expected to further strengthen the military alliance between the two countries. The US, which has imposed a 50 per cent tariff on India, has also pressured India to stop buying crude oil from Russia.
India, which has said that buying oil from Russia is a national right of the country, condemned the US tax as unfair. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had praised India for not bowing to US pressure.
In this context, Russia has also made further concessions on crude oil prices. It is expected that Russian oil supplies to India in September could increase by 10 to 20 percent compared to August.
