Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned from her post after violence broke out in protests demanding her resignation.
In Bangladesh, students spontaneously protested against the reservation of seats for the heirs of freedom struggle martyrs. At the same time, as Sheikh Hasina was determined to give reservation to the heirs of the martyrs, students took to the streets across the country to demand her resignation. More than 100 people died in the violence.
As the situation escalated, the army demanded that Sheikh Hasina step down. Also, Sheikh Hasina resigned as Prime Minister after protesters stormed the Prime Minister’s official residence and left the country with her sister Sheikh Rehana in a military helicopter. It has been reported that they have landed in Agartala, Tripura and India has given shelter to Sheikh Hasina.
Meanwhile, after learning that Sheikh Hasina had left the country, protesters vandalized the statue of her father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who was responsible for the creation of Bangladesh, in Dhaka.
After the resignation of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the military has taken over.
Addressing the people of the country, Chief of Army Staff Waqar-Uz-Zaman said that since Sheikh Hasina has resigned from the post of Prime Minister, the interim government led by the army will lead Bangladesh.
He also said that the army would investigate the loss of life in the protest and asked the students to give up their protest and return home.
After the army seized power in Bangladesh, border security forces have intensified checks on the West Bengal-Bangladesh border. Especially the Director General of Border Security Force is camped in Kolkata.
