Union Information Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has said that American social media companies should not teach India a lesson about democracy and freedom of expression.
Symbiosis International University in Pune, Maharashtra hosted a seminar on ‘Social Web and Social Security’ yesterday. On this occasion, Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said:
All rights have been given to freely operate social networking sites in India. Also, it is the duty of the state to focus on the welfare of the people using it and the security of the country. For this, new rules have been introduced to prevent misuse of social networking sites. These terms are not defined to interfere with your use of social networking sites.
The government is asking social media companies to set up a committee to work in India to address grievances of social media users and provide information on who was the first to make controversial remarks against the country’s sovereignty. Other than these I haven’t heard of anything impossible from social web companies.
But a handful of social networking companies are speaking out against these rules. Fair elections are held in India and the media and judiciary work independently. Therefore, American companies that come here to make profits and do business, they should not teach India the lesson of democracy and freedom of expression. If you want to work here, you have to follow the laws of India.
I promised you more time to follow the new rules. But, he (Twitter) didn’t listen. So they have lost the legal protection of India. now what to do? They must have met the case to proceed in court. Thus he said.
