Controversy Over Inscription of Political Leaders’ Names in Anakaputhur Temple – Protest by Opposition Parties

A controversy erupted at the Alavattamman Temple in Anakaputhur, near Chennai, after an inscription featuring the names of the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, and other DMK leaders was placed on a newly built front mandapam (entrance structure). Opposition parties and the public strongly condemned this act, leading to widespread protests.

Temple Front Mandapam Construction & Inscription Issue

The front mandapam of the Alavattamman Temple was constructed using funds collected from the general public. However, the placement of a plaque inscribing the names of the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, and other DMK leaders sparked outrage among devotees and political opponents.

Many viewed this as an attempt to politicize religious spaces. They argued that temples are sacred places of worship and should remain free from political influences.

Protests & Public Outrage

In response, opposition parties staged a protest against the state government, demanding:

  1. The immediate removal of the plaque containing the names of political leaders.
  2. Proper temple administration without any political interference.
  3. A clear separation between religious institutions and political achievements.

Many devotees also expressed their discontent, stating, “Temples are places of faith, not political advertisement boards.”

The Debate on Politics & Religion

This incident has reignited the debate on the role of politics in religious institutions. Should political leaders’ names be inscribed in places of worship? Does this act signify an attempt to exert political dominance over religious spaces?

The public is now closely watching how the state government will respond to this controversy.
