Artillery Attack on Religious Site in Sudan – 5 Killed
In a shocking incident, an artillery attack carried out by paramilitary forces on a religious site in Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, has resulted in the deaths of five people.
Ongoing Conflict Between the Military and Paramilitary Forces
Since the military coup in Sudan in 2021, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan has been leading the country as the head of the ruling authority. His deputy, General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, commands the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
As part of efforts to consolidate power, General al-Burhan attempted to integrate the RSF into the regular military. However, this move was strongly opposed by the RSF, leading to intense conflict between the two factions starting on April 15, 2023. Since then, both sides have launched continuous attacks, resulting in the deaths of thousands of civilians.
Targeting a Religious Site
In the latest attack, paramilitary forces fired artillery shells at an Islamic religious site in the Eastern Nile district of Khartoum. The assault left five people dead and many others injured.
As the Sudanese military intensifies its efforts to gain full control over Khartoum, the paramilitary RSF has retaliated with such targeted attacks.
Political analysts fear that this ongoing conflict will further destabilize Sudan, worsening the humanitarian crisis in the region.
