Bangkok Mass Shooting: Market Erupts in Chaos, Suspect’s Final Moments Caught on Camera
A gunman opened fire at Bangkok’s Or Tor Kor Market, killing five people — including four security personnel and one woman — before turning the weapon on himself. Authorities are currently investigating the motive behind the attack.
Following the deadly shooting at one of the Thai capital’s busiest food markets, videos have emerged capturing the shooter in action and the panic-stricken scenes in the area.
The shooting spree at Or Tor Kor Market, situated near the popular Chatuchak Market, claimed the lives of at least six people on Monday. The market is a well-known weekend hotspot for both tourists and locals.
The shooter’s identity has yet to be confirmed.
As per the police, the assailant fired multiple shots within the market premises, killing five individuals — four guards and one woman — before taking his own life using the same firearm.
Videos captured the moment terror broke out, with customers seen fleeing in panic amid the sound of continuous gunfire. Footage showed people scattering and seeking shelter as the shooter kept firing.
A separate video has also surfaced showing the suspect holding a firearm and walking through the parking area of the market.
Worapat Sukthai, the deputy police chief of the Bang Sue district, where the incident took place, stated that authorities are working to determine the reason behind the attack.
“We are investigating the motive. For now, it is being treated as a mass shooting,” Sukthai was quoted by AFP as saying.
He also mentioned that the suspect died by suicide following the incident and that efforts are underway to establish his identity. Investigators are also examining any potential connection between the attack and recent border tensions between Thailand and Cambodia.
Mass shootings have occurred in Thailand in the past. The country continues to grapple with widespread access to firearms due to lax enforcement of gun regulations.
