Bianca Andreescu Twists Ankle On Court, Still Clinches Victory Despite Injury

Former US Open titleholder Bianca Andreescu broke into tears following her Canadian Open win against Barbora Krejcikova, owing to an ankle injury.

Bianca Andreescu, the 2019 US Open winner, was visibly emotional on Sunday, July 27, after securing a hard-fought victory over Barbora Krejcikova in the Canadian Open’s opening round. Her tears stemmed from an unfortunate ankle injury she sustained during the match. The Canadian star, who exited the Wimbledon qualifiers earlier this year, is striving to return to top form.

A former World No. 4, Andreescu has faced a string of injury setbacks over the past five years. She had missed the 2020 Australian Open due to a knee injury. In 2023, she severely twisted her ankle at the Miami Open, requiring her to be wheeled off the court.

After a nine-month hiatus, she returned at last year’s French Open, where she was ousted in the third round by Jasmine Paolini. This came after a win over Anna Kalinskaya. Earlier this year, she also underwent an appendix surgery, sidelining her for another three months.

The injury on Sunday brought back memories of Miami 2023, as Andreescu rolled her ankle again. (Watch the video here.)

“In the end, I feel I got really lucky. It’s so unfortunate—I really don’t know what to say. You all mean the world to me, honestly, thank you so much. Moments like these are always difficult, so I’m just really glad I could get through it,” said Andreescu in her emotional post-match comments.

Just last week, Team Canada made history by winning their first Hopman Cup. Andreescu partnered with Felix Auger-Aliassime to defeat Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti and Flavio Cobolli in Sunday’s final held in Bari.

With singles wins from both Andreescu and Cobolli, the title came down to the doubles match, where the Canadian duo triumphed 6-3, 6-3.
