Both Houses Set to Resume After Day 3 Uproar Over Operation Sindoor, Bihar SIR
Rajya Sabha Members of Parliament Ranjeet Ranjan and Akhilesh Prasad Singh have submitted a Suspension of Business Notice in the Rajya Sabha under Rule 267, urging a debate on the constitutional and electoral ramifications of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar.
During the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal is expected to present The Merchant Shipping Bill, 2024 for approval. The Bill aims to modernize and consolidate India’s merchant shipping-related legislation.
In the meantime, proceedings in Parliament came to a disorderly halt on Wednesday, as opposition members demanded debates on the Pahalgam incident and Operation Sindoor, resulting in adjournment of both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. The INDIA bloc leaders also staged protests outside Parliament, opposing the SIR exercise being carried out in Bihar.
A comprehensive 16-hour debate on Operation Sindoor is scheduled to begin on July 28. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will join the discussion once he returns from his foreign visits to the United Kingdom and the Maldives.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is also slated to deliver a reply following the extended discussion in the House.
Opposition leaders have persistently called for Prime Minister Modi’s direct involvement in the debate concerning Operation Sindoor. Congress leader and Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi criticized the Prime Minister for remaining silent on the multiple “ceasefire” statements made by US President Donald Trump.
