The Madras High Court has upheld the one-year prison sentence imposed on Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MNMK) MLA Jawahirullah and others.
This case was registered under the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) and the Indian Penal Code (IPC). According to the charges, an amount of ₹1.5 crore was allegedly received illegally from foreign sources.
Initially, a lower court conducted an inquiry and, upon confirming the charges, sentenced the accused to one year in prison. An appeal was subsequently filed, and the case was reviewed by the Madras High Court. However, after examining the arguments, the High Court upheld the lower court’s verdict.
This ruling serves as a significant precedent for politicians and the general public. It reinforces the fact that receiving foreign funds without proper authorization is a serious offense that can lead to strict legal consequences. Additionally, it highlights the importance of transparency and compliance with legal financial regulations.
