Chelsea Unveil Jorrel Hato; 19-Year-Old Ajax Defender Signs Contract Until 2032

Chelsea have officially announced the signing of 19-year-old Jorrel Hato on a long-term deal that will see him stay at Stamford Bridge until 2032. Born in Rotterdam, Hato began his football career with Sparta before joining Ajax’s youth setup in 2018, and made his Eredivisie debut at the age of 16.

The young defender expressed his delight at joining the London-based club. “I’m extremely thrilled and very happy to be here,” Hato said. “I gave a lot of thought to my future and felt it was time to take the next big step in my career. Chelsea is the perfect place for that, so I’m really happy.”

Hato, who hails from Rotterdam, kicked off his football journey with Sparta before moving to Ajax’s famed youth academy in 2018. He signed his first professional contract with Ajax in 2022 when he was just 16, and quickly gained attention with his performances in the UEFA Youth League and for Jong Ajax, the club’s reserve team.

In the same year, he made his senior debut in the Eredivisie against Cambuur, becoming the third-youngest player ever to do so for Ajax. He ended that season by starting in the final of the Dutch Cup — a reflection of his rapid development.

From the beginning of the 2023/24 season, Hato has been a regular fixture in Ajax’s starting XI. Comfortable playing as a central defender or as a left-back, he featured primarily in the latter role during the previous season.

Hato is known for his strong tackling, ability to carry the ball forward, and leadership qualities that are rare for someone his age. Impressively, he captained Ajax at just 17.

On the international front, Hato has shown equally impressive progress. He made his senior debut for the Netherlands national team at 17 and has already earned six caps. This summer, he led the Dutch side as captain at the UEFA Under-21 European Championship.
