Jayalalithaa played a key role in overthrowing the Vajpayee regime in 1999. Now that Modi is establishing a minority government, the things that happened at that time have come into focus.
Jayalalithaa came to our house. BJP functionaries were here. We all ate food. He asked to transfer the cases tried under DMK rule to another state.
After that he went to his hotel. But suddenly there was a political earthquake. Not stopping there, Vajpayee withdrew support for the government. Then Vajpayee said.. I felt more pressure in this regime than I was happy as Prime Minister. He left the government saying that the pressure I was under was too much. To that extent, Jayalalithaa Vajpayee ruled the country.
Vajpayee’s first government in 1996 lasted for 13 days and the second in 1999 for 13 months. Both times the Vajpayee government was defeated by a no-confidence motion. In 1996, Vajpayee resigned ahead of the confidence vote, failing to garner enough support in the 1999 no-confidence vote. It was then that Jayalalithaa overthrew the government by a margin of 1 vote.
In 1999, BJP won 182 seats and Congress won 114 seats. He formed the government with the support given by Jayalalithaa.
On 17 April 1999, the AIADMK withdrew from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) coalition government led by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee after failing to win a trust vote in the Lok Sabha.
ADMK general secretary J. Jayalalithaa had been threatening to withdraw support from the ruling coalition unless certain demands were met, particularly the BJP government at the centre. In the end, his demands were not accepted and the regime was dissolved.
In 1999, Jayalalithaa played a key role in overthrowing the Vajpayee regime. Now that Modi is establishing a minority government, the things that happened at that time have come into focus. The question is whether Chandrababu Naidu will do to Modi what Jayalalithaa did to Vajpayee.
Support: BJP does not get majority in 2024 Lok Sabha elections. BJP has won 240 seats. BJP needs the support of Telugu Desam and United Janata Dal in NDA to form government. Like this, the support of the Lok Janata Party and Shinde’s Shiv Sena Party is also needed.
BJP can form government only with their support. Henceforth BJP is in a situation where what they say is the law.
No BJP Majority: NDA alliance has won nearly 292 seats in 2024 Lok Sabha elections. BJP alone has won 240 seats. Congress won 97 seats. India Alliance has won 229 seats. In many places the complete results are yet to be announced.
Chandrababu Naidu – Nitish King: BJP did not get a single majority in this Lok Sabha election. Thus BJP can form government only with the support of Chandrababu Naidu and Nitish Kumar.
Nitish Kumar’s United Janata Dal should support him to form a BJP government in Bihar. They have 12 MPs. Chandrababu Naidu’s Telugu Desam in Andhra Pradesh should support BJP to form government. They have 16 MPs. BJP cannot form government without their support.
Now with their support, Modi is going to form the government. But the question is how long will their support last and how long will Modi’s rule last?
