‘Disgrace To Humanity’: Belgian Monarch Condemns ‘Humanitarian Violations’ In Gaza | Watch

Belgium’s King Philippe labelled the Gaza airstrikes a “disgrace to humanity.” His rare political remark aligns with the United Nations’ appeal to halt the conflict.

Belgian King Philippe voiced strong condemnation over the ongoing bombings in Gaza. He referred to the situation as a “disgrace to humanity” during a speech delivered ahead of Belgium’s National Day on Monday. His remarks have drawn widespread attention on social media, as it is uncommon for a monarch—who typically avoids political discourse—to make such forthright comments.

“I join the voices of all those condemning the severe humanitarian violations in Gaza, where innocent civilians are starving and being bombed while confined to their regions,” Philippe stated from his royal residence in Brussels, as quoted by Reuters.

“The current circumstances have persisted for far too long. This is a shame upon all humanity. We echo the call made by the UN Secretary-General to bring an immediate end to this unbearable tragedy,” he added.

Philippe’s forthright and public stance marks his first direct intervention on an international conflict. Meanwhile, Belgium’s federal authorities have maintained a more cautious approach in their statements regarding the Gaza situation.

The king’s constitutional role in Belgium is largely ceremonial, restricted to offering guidance, encouragement, and cautionary advice to the government, without engaging in executive or legislative functions.

Israel launched its military operations in Gaza following an assault in October 2023 by Hamas-led militants on Israeli communities, resulting in 1,200 fatalities and 251 people being taken hostage. Since then, Israeli forces have reportedly killed more than 59,000 individuals in Gaza, according to health authorities. Much of the region has been reduced to rubble, with Israel imposing tight restrictions on food and other essential aid.
