Mehul Choksi, a fugitive diamond trader, has fled India and is living on the island of Antigua after being accused in a ₹ 13,5000 crore PNB scam that rocked the country. A Dominica court on Thursday ordered Mehul Choksi to be sent to jail. He has been in police custody so far. But he is said to be continuing treatment at the hospital as his health has deteriorated.
Attorney Vijay Agarwal said, “The police have been shifted to jail custody but he will be in hospital as his medical condition has deteriorated.” Thus, there is hope that he may be sent back to India soon.
The Foreign Ministry said on Thursday that the government was in active talks with the Dominica government over the extradition of Mehul Choksi, a diamond trader who fled to avoid legal action in India.
“Mehul Choksi is currently in custody in Dominica and legal action is being taken against him,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Arindam Baki told reporters at a weekly press conference. He expressed confidence that the Government of India was in active talks with the Government of Dominica regarding the extradition of Mikul Choksi to India for trial and that this would soon be possible.
Baki said the Dominica government has been informed about the criminal cases against Mehul Choksi in India and matters related to Indian citizenship. A magistrate’s court in Dominica has adjourned until June 25 the trial of a case in which Choksi allegedly entered the Caribbean island nation illegally.
Lawsuits are pending in Dominica court against fugitive diamond dealer Choksi. Choksi was arrested on May 24 for mysteriously entering Dominica after mysteriously disappearing from Antigua and Barbuda.
