Double leaf symbol issue, internal party problem of AIADMK… Election commission notice to Edappadi, OPS

The issue surrounding the “Two Leaves” symbol is deeply connected to internal disputes within the AIADMK after the death of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa. Following her death, the party saw several leadership changes, and tensions arose, especially between Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) and O. Panneerselvam (OPS). This split led to confusion regarding the rightful claimant of the party’s “Two Leaves” symbol, which eventually became a legal matter.

Suryamoorthy from Dindigul filed a petition with the Election Commission, arguing that the internal disputes and violations of party rules prevented the proper use of the symbol. He sought a ruling from the Election Commission, claiming that the party should not be allowed to use the “Two Leaves” symbol until these internal disputes were resolved.

The Election Commission had previously sent notices to AIADMK over this issue, and now, following a ruling by the Madras High Court, it has been ordered that EPS, OPS, and Suryamoorthy must appear before the Election Commission on the 19th of this month. They have also been asked to submit their written arguments on the matter. The Election Commission is expected to make a decision on this issue soon, after hearing all parties involved.

The dispute over the “Two Leaves” symbol remains unresolved, with the court directing the Election Commission to make a decision within four weeks, and ensuring that all parties, including EPS and OPS, are consulted before a conclusion is reached.
