Residents along the banks of the Billur Dam near Mettupalayam have been warned of the danger of floods as the southwest monsoon is intensifying in Kerala.
Pillur Dam is located in the Pillur Forest on the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border near Mettupalayam in Coimbatore district.
The dam is the main catchment for rainwater in Kerala and the Nilgiris.
The water supply to the Billur Dam started increasing from Wednesday night due to the southwest monsoon, which has been intensifying in the southwest monsoon for the past two days in areas like Apparbhavani in Kerala and the Nilgiris district.
Then at midnight the water supply gradually increased to 10 thousand cubic feet and the water level of the dam rose to 97 feet out of the total capacity of 100 feet.
Excess water discharged into the Bhavani River
As the full capacity of the Billur Dam will touch 100 feet, 10 thousand cubic feet of water is being discharged into the Bhavani River through four dams for the safety of the dam.
