Florian Wirtz Unfazed by Record Price Tag After Liverpool Move
Liverpool’s new midfield sensation Florian Wirtz says he isn’t bothered by the massive transfer fee involved in his move from Bayer Leverkusen, despite the British record deal potentially rising to £116 million with add-ons.
The 22-year-old German international, who joined the Premier League champions earlier this summer, spoke after Liverpool’s 3-2 pre-season win over Athletic Bilbao, saying he remains focused purely on football, not finances.
“I don’t think about it. I just want to play football. How much money the clubs pay between each other — it doesn’t matter,” Wirtz said calmly when asked about the pressure of his transfer fee.
He added that his primary goal is to contribute to Liverpool’s continued success:
“Of course, the big challenge is to win the title again, and it’s the most difficult thing. So I will try to create chances and also work off the ball,” Wirtz said.
“I can run a lot — I’ll bring that to the team. And with the ball, I want to make the team better and bring my teammates into good positions.”
Liverpool are gearing up to face FA Cup winners Crystal Palace in the Community Shield this Sunday, before beginning their Premier League title defence at home against Bournemouth on August 15.
Wirtz also shared his initial thoughts on the differences between English and German football:
“There are some differences to Germany, but I think it’s something I can learn from and improve. I’m really looking forward to it,” he said.
“It’s more intense, more physical. Every player is really strong, really fast — that’s what everybody keeps telling me.”
Wirtz is among several major signings by Liverpool this summer, with the club spending over £250 million on reinforcements including Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, and Giorgi Mamardashvili. Reports suggest the Merseyside outfit is also actively pursuing a deal for a Newcastle United forward as they bolster their squad for another title challenge.
