Tamil Nadu BJP state president Annamalai has said that food for the breakfast program should be prepared in Amma canteens and that attempts to award contracts to private companies should be abandoned.
In a post he posted in this regard, he said: “Food is being prepared in Amma canteens for the breakfast program for more than 65,000 students in more than 350 schools in Chennai. Through this, those working in Amma canteens have been getting a steady income.
In 2023, when the Chennai Corporation tried to award the contract for the breakfast program to a private company, they abandoned that decision due to strong opposition in the council. Now, they are again demanding a contract to award the contract to a private company.
In July last year, the DMK government announced that it had allocated Rs. 21 crore for the improvement of Amma canteens. Why are they trying to award the contract to private companies for two years instead of preparing food for school students in such improved Amma canteens?
I strongly condemn the DMK, which has been ruling the country with a drama model for four years, by announcing schemes for the sake of eye-catching or changing schemes for their own profit motives, and for trying to use the Chennai Corporation and school children for this.
I urge the Chennai Corporation to continue to prepare food for the breakfast program in Amma canteens and to stop trying to award contracts to private parties,” Annamalai said.
