“Frustrating”: Karishma Tanna Opens Up About Lack of Work After Acclaimed Role in Scoop

Actress Karishma Tanna, who won widespread acclaim for her powerful performance in Scoop, has revealed her disappointment at the lack of substantial acting opportunities following the show’s success. Despite receiving international recognition and awards, Tanna says she has barely worked since, apart from a brief appearance in Call Me Bae.

In a recent interview with Hindustan Times, Tanna admitted that she finds the current phase “frustrating” as she continues to wait for meaningful, character-driven scripts to come her way.

“I genuinely don’t have an answer. Scoop was challenging and acting-driven — I finally got a platform after a long time,” she said. “It’s not like I’ve become super selective after the show. I know a great script with a good director can elevate the project. I’m just waiting for that kind of work.”

Karishma, who portrayed crime journalist Jagruti Pathak in the Hansal Mehta-directed series, had hoped the performance would open new doors for serious acting opportunities. But the reality has been quite different.

“I want to be back on set… to hold a script again, face the camera, and work with directors and producers,” she added. “But this is the price you pay for doing a show like Scoop – now I have to wait for something equally powerful. It’s a mixed bag of emotions. Sometimes I feel like accepting whatever comes next. I don’t even know if being back on set will make me happy or not.”

Scoop, inspired by journalist Jigna Vora’s memoir Behind Bars in Byculla: My Days in Prison, follows the gripping story of a reporter falsely accused in a high-profile murder case. The show is available for streaming on Netflix.

Tanna’s performance earned her the Best Actress in a Drama Series award at the 2023 Filmfare OTT Awards and the Critics’ Best Actress honour at the 2024 Dadasaheb Phalke International Film Festival.

Despite the accolades, Karishma’s phone hasn’t been ringing with the kind of offers she expected. The actress’ honest admission sheds light on the unpredictability of success and recognition in the entertainment industry.

The series also stars Mohammad Zeeshan Ayyub, Harman Baweja, Deven Bhojani, Tannishtha Chatterjee, Prosenjit Chatterjee, and Shikha Talsania in key roles.
