GDP Growth: Annamalai compares Congress’ 60-year record with BJP’s rapid progress
BJP Tamil Nadu President K. Annamalai responded to former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram’s criticism of the Prime Minister’s remarks on railway fund allocations by highlighting the country’s economic progress under BJP rule.
Annamalai stated, “It took 60 years of Congress rule for India’s GDP to reach 1 trillion dollars. Today, under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, the GDP has reached 4 trillion dollars.” He thanked Chidambaram for indirectly acknowledging this progress.
Reacting to Chidambaram’s post on X (formerly Twitter), where he criticized Prime Minister Modi for claiming that Tamil Nadu is receiving significant railway funding, Annamalai countered with data. He noted that during the UPA rule between 2009 and 2014, Tamil Nadu received only ₹900 crore annually on average for railway projects.
In contrast, he pointed out that for the financial year 2025–26 alone, Tamil Nadu has been allocated ₹6,626 crore for railway development—showcasing a significant increase in investment under the BJP government.
