Has the Tamil Nadu Police Failed? – Annamalai Raises Serious Allegations

In a strongly worded statement, BJP National Executive Committee member K. Annamalai has questioned the effectiveness of the Tamil Nadu Police following a series of gruesome murders that have shocked the state. The recent incident that prompted his reaction was the brutal murder of an elderly couple living alone near Sathyamangalam in Erode district. Annamalai expressed deep concern over the pattern of murders targeting people who live alone, indicating a disturbing trend.

Referring to multiple cases, he recalled the 2023 murder of four members of a family in Palladam and the 2024 triple murder in Chemalaikoundampalayam in Tiruppur district, where a mother, father, and son were hacked to death. What connects these incidents, according to Annamalai, is the close proximity — all occurring within a 50 km radius — and the apparent similarity in method and motive.

Annamalai criticized the state police for their failure to arrest a single accused in any of these high-profile murder cases. He pointed out that despite clear signs of a pattern in these crimes, the investigation has made no significant progress, leading to fears that the police machinery in Tamil Nadu has become dysfunctional.

In his statement, he accused the ruling DMK government of downplaying the severity of the situation. He took particular aim at Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s earlier comment in the Legislative Assembly, where he referred to such crimes as isolated incidents happening “here and there.” Annamalai challenged this claim, asking whether a series of brutal murders with similar modus operandi can really be dismissed as unrelated events.

He also emphasized that the failure to prevent such crimes or bring the culprits to justice has created widespread fear and insecurity among the public. Annamalai warned that if the Chief Minister continues to ignore or cover up the seriousness of the issue, it will only confirm that there is no guarantee of safety for the people of Tamil Nadu under the current government.

He reiterated the BJP’s earlier demand to hand over the investigation of these interconnected murder cases to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), arguing that only an independent, central agency can uncover the truth behind this disturbing pattern.

The statements by Annamalai have once again stirred the political debate in Tamil Nadu, placing the spotlight on the state’s law and order management. While the DMK government has yet to respond directly to these allegations, the pressure is mounting to show results in these investigations.

Whether these concerns lead to concrete action remains to be seen. But one thing is clear — public confidence in the state’s policing system is being tested, and accountability is the need of the hour.
