High Court sets final deadline to remove flagpoles across Tamil Nadu!

Madras High Court Orders Removal of Flagpoles from Public Places and Highways Across Tamil Nadu by April 21

The Madras High Court has set a final deadline of April 21 for the removal of all unauthorized flagpoles erected in public places and highways across Tamil Nadu.

Case Background

Advocate Rakesh filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Madras High Court, seeking the removal of a flagpole installed on the sidewalk in Chennai’s Royapuram. The petition argued that the flagpole obstructed pedestrian movement and created inconvenience for the public.

Court Proceedings

During the hearing, the Tamil Nadu government referred to a previous ruling by the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court, which ordered the removal of all flagpoles installed in public places, highways, and local body areas within 12 weeks.

The government also assured the court that officials were already taking necessary steps to implement the earlier order.

Final Verdict by the Madras High Court

Taking these submissions into account, the Madras High Court has now set April 21 as the final deadline for the removal of all flagpoles in public spaces and highways across Tamil Nadu.

Additionally, the court warned that failure to comply with this order could lead to contempt of court proceedings. Following this ruling, local authorities are expected to intensify efforts to remove all unauthorized flagpoles before the deadline.
