In A First, Indian Tricolour Hoisted On Seattle’s Iconic Space Needle To Mark Independence Day
In a historic first for Seattle, the Indian national flag was hoisted atop the Space Needle to commemorate India’s 79th Independence Day. Built in 1962 for the World Fair, the Space Needle remains an iconic symbol of Seattle’s skyline and represents the tech-driven future of the US Pacific Northwest.
The ceremony saw the Consul General of India in Seattle, along with Mayor Bruce Harrell and select city dignitaries, participate in the historic occasion. They acknowledged the significant contributions of the Indian-American community in shaping Seattle’s journey as a tech hub in the region.
A community reception was later hosted by the Consulate at the scenic Kerry Park, offering panoramic views of the Space Needle with the Indian flag in the backdrop. Large numbers of Indian-Americans gathered to witness this historic moment.
Several prominent US officials attended the reception, including US Congressman Adam Smith (WA-9th district), Chief Justice of the Washington Supreme Court Debra L. Stephens, Seattle Port Commissioner Sam Cho, and Superintendent/Director of Seattle Parks & Recreation AP Diaz. Speaking at the event, Congressman Smith welcomed the historic celebration, noting that the tricolour atop the Space Needle symbolises diversity and strong ties between India and the Pacific Northwest.
The celebrations also featured a cultural programme, including national anthems, Indian dance performances showcasing the country’s rich artistic heritage, and a poetry recital by renowned artist and actor Piyush Mishra.
In a special gesture marking India’s Independence Day, King County—covering 39 cities—along with Seattle, Spokane, Tacoma, and Bellevue, issued official proclamations declaring August 15 as India Day.
Additionally, several iconic Seattle landmarks were illuminated in the Indian tricolour, including Lumen Stadium, T-Mobile Stadium, Westin, Seattle Great Wheel, and the Space Needle itself. The Indian flag was also hoisted at Tacoma Dome, Tacoma City Hall, and the headquarters of Tacoma Police and Fire Departments.
India inaugurated its 6th Consulate in Seattle (Washington) in November 2023, and since then, it has actively strengthened its engagements with the US Pacific Northwest.
