Officials of the Department of Hindu Religious Affairs have sealed off 9.58 acres of land belonging to the Gouri Ganesha Temple in Sivagangai, a commercial complex built by former AIADMK minister Baskaran in the name of Benami.
The Sivagangai Gouri Ganesha Temple, under the Department of Hindu Religious Affairs, owns 142 acres of land on the Thanjavur-Paramagudi bypass road in the Kanchirangal Panchayat, Mahasivanandal ‘Group’.
Aggression
A case is pending in the court against those who have already occupied the temple land and built houses.
A complaint was lodged with the Chief Minister’s private office alleging that 9.58 acres of land was being illegally occupied and a commercial complex was being built in the name of the temple.
The building, which was set on vacant land, was locked and ‘sealed’ by the ‘fencing’ part of the building for the commercial complex in Mip.
The board also warned that legal action would be taken if land owned by the temple was occupied.
The Assistant Commissioner of the Department of Hindu Religious Affairs said:
The order came from the government to reclaim the occupied land. We inspected the place and sealed the mall.
Thus he said.
Former Minister Baskaran said:
I have nothing to do with occupying this land. When I was a minister for the last 5 years, I did not allow any complaints.
