Independence Day 2025: President Murmu Calls Op Sindoor a Historic Stand Against Terrorism

India is set to celebrate its 79th Independence Day on Friday, August 15, with patriotic enthusiasm, marking the nation’s freedom from more than two centuries of British colonial rule in 1947.

President Droupadi Murmu addressed the nation on Thursday evening, highlighting the significance of the day. She described Operation Sindoor as a landmark moment, symbolizing humanity’s collective fight against terrorism.

Every year, Independence Day is observed with flag-hoisting ceremonies nationwide, accompanied by singing of the national anthem, drills, and cultural programmes. This year, the celebrations carry the theme ‘Naya Bharat,’ representing India’s vision of becoming a prosperous, secure, and independent nation by 2047, according to a Ministry of Defence release.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead the main celebrations at the historic Red Fort, where he will unfurl the Tricolour and address the nation. Flying Officer Rashika Sharma will assist in the flag-hoisting ceremony.

Around 5,000 special guests from across India are expected to attend, including members of the Indian contingent for the Special Olympics 2025, winners of international sporting events, 50 top-performing Swachhta workers, and tribal children from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The Indian Air Force is coordinating the event, which will feature a ceremonial Guard of Honour, a 21-gun salute, and a special flypast showcasing both the National Flag and the Operation Sindoor flag.
