India Successfully Foils Pakistan’s Cyber Attacks After Pahalgam Terror Incident – A News Summary
Following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, India has responded with strong and strategic countermeasures on multiple fronts, including cyberspace. In a fresh wave of cyber aggression, Pakistan-backed hacker groups attempted to target critical Indian military-related websites, but the Indian cybersecurity establishment successfully foiled these efforts.
The hacker groups, identified as “Cyber Group HOAX1337” and “National Cyber Crew”, reportedly tried to breach several Indian Army-related websites. Their targets included the Army Nursing College, Army Public Schools, Army Welfare Housing Organisation, Army Welfare Placement Organisation, and other military-linked portals. These attacks were aimed not just at disabling the websites but also at spreading misinformation and anti-India propaganda, especially in the wake of the Pahalgam terror strike.
Specifically, attempts were made to take down the websites of army schools in Nagrota and Sunjuwan. The attackers also sought to upload fake news meant to insult the memory of the Hindu victims of the Pahalgam attack. Other efforts were directed at hacking into the Army’s hotel management school and ex-servicemen’s healthcare portals.
Unable to breach India’s high-security central networks, the hackers instead shifted their focus to websites related to education, child welfare, and public utility services, hoping to cause disruption in less-secure sectors. However, even these attempts were quickly identified and neutralized by Indian cybersecurity agencies.
One of the key findings during the investigation was a malicious PDF file titled “Report & Update on Pahalgam Terror Attack”, which was designed to spread malware. Indian cyber experts detected and neutralized this file before any damage could occur.
India has long accused Pakistan of not only supporting cross-border terrorism but also of waging a digital war. These cyberattacks are considered part of a larger strategy to destabilize India. During a recent weekly hotline conversation between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both countries, India formally warned Pakistan about such digital intrusions.
According to Maharashtra’s cybercrime unit, more than 1 million cyber attacks were recorded after the Pahalgam incident. Besides Pakistan, hacker groups from Middle Eastern countries, Indonesia, and Morocco were also found to be involved. Many of these hackers are believed to be driven by Islamic extremist ideologies, aiming to attack Indian digital infrastructure.
Indian military sources say that Pakistan’s repeated cyber attacks seem intended to provoke and test India’s patience and resilience. However, India has remained calm, composed, and strategically responsive. So far in this year alone, Pakistan has violated the ceasefire agreement 15 times and engaged in 2,651 incidents of cross-border firing near the Line of Control (LoC). There have also been three recorded attempts at terrorist infiltration, allegedly supported by the Pakistani military.
Amid these tensions, the Indian Navy recently conducted successful missile interception tests aboard its warship INS Surat, demonstrating its operational readiness. Similarly, the Indian Air Force is conducting high-alert training exercises to ensure preparedness on all fronts.
