IndiGo Imposes Flying Ban on Passenger Who Slapped Co-Traveller Mid-Air on Mumbai-Kolkata Flight
IndiGo has barred Hafijul Rahaman from flying after he assaulted a fellow passenger who was experiencing a panic attack on a flight from Mumbai to Kolkata.
On Saturday, IndiGo announced that it had imposed a flying ban on a passenger involved in slapping and physically assaulting a co-passenger onboard flight 6E138 from Mumbai to Kolkata. The incident took place on Friday, after the victim reportedly suffered a panic attack during the journey.
Sharing details on X (formerly Twitter), the airline stated that the matter had been thoroughly examined and formally reported to the concerned authorities for appropriate action.
“As part of our commitment to discourage such unruly conduct onboard our flights, the individual has been suspended from flying with IndiGo, in line with the applicable aviation guidelines,” IndiGo said in its post.
“We remain devoted to ensuring a safe, respectful, and pleasant travel experience for all passengers. We appreciate your ongoing trust,” the airline added.
Details of the Incident
The victim has been identified as Hussain Ahmed Majumdar, a native of the Cachar district in Assam. According to The Hindu, he suffered a panic attack while travelling on the IndiGo flight and insisted on deboarding mid-air.
While two members of the cabin crew were attempting to assist him, a fellow passenger seated in the aisle row suddenly slapped Majumdar — an act caught on video by another traveller onboard.
The attacker, identified as Hafijul Rahaman, was taken into custody by security officials once the flight landed in Kolkata and was handed over to the local police, according to reports.
A video of the incident has since gone viral. It shows Majumdar appearing distressed while being guided back to his seat by airline staff, when Rahaman abruptly struck him across the face.
Passenger Reported Missing After Incident
In a concerning twist, Majumdar has reportedly gone missing following the incident. As per a report in The Times of India, the assaulted passenger was scheduled to travel onward from Kolkata to Silchar but did not reach his destination.
“When we couldn’t locate him on the Silchar-bound flight, we contacted the local police and even visited Udharband Police Station near the Silchar airport,” one of his relatives told the publication.
