Israel Launches Overnight Airstrikes on Gaza – Dozens Killed, Tensions Soar

The Israel-Gaza conflict, which reignited with intensity in recent weeks, escalated further as Israeli forces carried out heavy overnight airstrikes across the Gaza Strip. The renewed violence comes amid stalled ceasefire negotiations and growing humanitarian concerns in the region.

Background of the Conflict

The ongoing Israel-Gaza war began on October 7, 2023, following a surprise attack by the militant group Hamas on Israeli territory. In response, Israel launched a large-scale military operation targeting various Hamas strongholds in Gaza.

In February 2024, a temporary ceasefire agreement was implemented. During this period, both sides engaged in a hostage exchange deal, facilitated by international mediators. While the ceasefire brought a brief pause in hostilities, discussions on a permanent truce faced setbacks—particularly over the terms of further hostage releases.

These delays and disagreements eventually caused the fragile ceasefire to collapse, leading to a fresh wave of military assaults, most notably by Israeli forces in recent days.

Netanyahu’s Declaration of New Security Measures

Two days ago, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made a significant announcement during a press briefing. He stated:

“Israel will establish a new security corridor throughout Gaza to increase pressure on Hamas. This move will allow us to isolate the southern city of Rafah from the rest of the Palestinian territories and help dismantle Hamas’ operational capabilities.”

The announcement was widely interpreted as a prelude to expanded military operations, especially in southern Gaza, where thousands of displaced Palestinians had taken shelter.

Overnight Strikes and Civilian Casualties

Just hours after the announcement, Israeli fighter jets launched a series of airstrikes across key areas in Gaza. According to reports, at least 54 people were killed in the attacks, with the majority being women and children.

Casualty Reports from Medical Facilities:

  • Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis received the bodies of 14 people, including 5 children and 4 women, all from a single family.
  • European Hospital, located near Khan Younis, received 19 more bodies following the strikes.
  • Al-Aqsa Hospital reported receiving the bodies of 21 people, including 7 children.

The airstrikes targeted densely populated areas, raising concerns among international humanitarian organizations. Many of the deceased were civilians who had already been displaced multiple times since the beginning of the conflict.

International Reactions and Humanitarian Concerns

The renewed military actions by Israel have sparked global outrage and calls for restraint. Human rights groups and several governments have urged both sides to return to the negotiating table and to prioritize the safety of civilians.

Aid agencies have also warned of a worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, as infrastructure crumbles and medical facilities become overwhelmed.
