In the past few days, the number of customers in BSNL, which is controlled by the central government, has started increasing. The main reason for this is the dramatic tariff hike by the telecom service companies.

Private telecom operators such as Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea dominate the market with 90-95 percent of India’s telecom customers. It used this dominance to drive up the tariffs disproportionately.

It is undeniable that all these 3 telecom companies decided to increase their profit margins and drastically hiked tariffs in early July.

Jio, Airtel and Vi could raise their telecom service charges by 10 to 27 per cent to earn around Rs 47,500 crore a year. But it was a huge burden on the common people.

Common middle class people who cannot afford this tariff hike are switching their mobile network with MNP service, showing interest in using BSNL’s cheaper tariff plan.

According to the current information, around 2.75 million customers have switched to BSNL network since July 3-4 after the tariff hike of Jio, Airtel and Vi came into effect.

There are mainly 2 reasons for this sudden change:

  1. The service is offered at lower rates compared to Jio, Airtel, Vi. In particular, the service is provided at a low rate to suit the lower income brackets.
  2. BSNL has now partnered with Tata group to bring 4G services to various parts of the country. This 4G service is also cheaper and people are switching from other networks with great enthusiasm.
