Joon Park celebrates his 56th birthday. From spearheading g.o.d to making strides in Hollywood and YouTube, delve into the K-pop star’s formative years, professional journey, and lasting impact in Korean showbiz.
Joon Park: Background and Private Life
Joon Park Hyung, also known as Joon Park, is a Korean-American singer and actor born in South Korea. With over 20 years in the industry, he rose to fame as the leader and rapper of the K-pop group g.o.d (Groove Over Dose), which gained massive popularity during the 2000s. On his 56th birthday today, we take a look at his upbringing, path in entertainment, career peaks, and his contributions to K-pop.
Joon Park entered the world on July 20, 1969, in Seoul, South Korea. Not long after, he and his family—including his parents and two siblings—relocated to the United States. He was brought up in Los Angeles.
After finishing school in California, he joined California State University, Long Beach, earning a degree in Graphic Design. He initially worked as a graphic designer before stepping into the entertainment field.
In 2014, it was revealed that he was in a relationship with a flight attendant who was 13 years younger than him. A year later, they tied the knot in a private ceremony in Seoul. Their daughter was born in 2017.
Joon Park: Career Path in Entertainment
In 1997, Joon Park returned to South Korea to chase a dream in the entertainment world. He signed with an agency and began scouting members for a music group that would blend Korean and Western styles.
Before debuting, the group endured many challenges, including South Korea’s 1997 financial crisis. The group, originally a co-ed act called GOT7, brought on Park Jin Young (JYP) as their mentor and music producer.
After one member left, the act debuted in 1999 as a five-member group named g.o.d. Their first album, Chapter 1, dropped in January that year. They made their TV debut performing the song To Mother, which was partly inspired by Joon’s own upbringing by his widowed mom.
Two years after their debut, the group nearly broke up following a dating controversy involving Joon Park. However, after public criticism, the agency chose not to disband them.
In 2005, Joon exited the group to pursue acting in the U.S. Though g.o.d didn’t disband, they went on an indefinite pause.
He began his acting career in Hollywood with a small role in the 2008 film Speed Racer. Over the years, Joon has acted in various K-dramas and been featured on several Korean variety shows.
In 2014, he made a comeback to Korea for g.o.d’s 15-year anniversary and rejoined SidusHQ. The group dropped Chapter 8, marking a return after nearly ten years.

Joon Park: Impact in K-Pop
Together with his g.o.d bandmates, Joon Park is regarded as one of the early trailblazers of K-pop. During the early 2000s, they were among South Korea’s top-selling musical acts. The group—consisting of Joon Park, Danny Ahn, Son Ho Young, Kim Tae Woo, and Yoon Kye Sang—stood out for fusing R&B, hip-hop, rap, funk, and Korean ballads.
Unlike other groups using English in their lyrics, g.o.d chose to perform entirely in Korean. They also pioneered having their own reality program, g.o.d’s Babysitting Diaries. The group earned the title “the nation’s group” thanks to their modest image, strong vocals, and lyrics that struck a chord with everyday people.
