Kerala Reports Highest COVID Spike in the Country – Concern Over Spread in Bordering Tamil Nadu Districts
COVID-19 infections are once again on the rise across various parts of India. Notably, Kerala has reported the highest number of cases in the country, sparking concern among neighboring states and health authorities.
In the last 24 hours, 257 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed across India, out of which a staggering 182 cases were from Kerala alone. This makes Kerala the top contributor to the national tally, raising questions about local containment and the potential risk of spread to adjacent regions.
Among Kerala’s districts, Kottayam has reported the highest number of cases at 57, followed by Ernakulam with 34 cases and Thiruvananthapuram with 30 cases. The situation has triggered concerns in Tamil Nadu, especially in districts sharing a border with Kerala. Theni district, which lies on the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border, is now considered at potential risk due to frequent cross-border movement of people and goods. Social activists and local health experts have raised alarms about the possibility of the virus spreading into Tamil Nadu if adequate precautions are not taken.
Activists have urged state authorities to reinforce COVID screening at all interstate checkpoints, particularly for travelers entering Tamil Nadu from Kerala. There is a demand for mandatory COVID testing at the border posts and stricter enforcement of safety protocols, especially mask usage, social distancing, and avoidance of public gatherings.
In response to the rising numbers, Kerala’s health department has ramped up its efforts. Surveillance teams have been activated, random testing has been increased, and contact tracing is being carried out with renewed focus. Travelers exhibiting symptoms like fever, cough, cold, or difficulty breathing are being advised to report immediately to nearby medical facilities for testing and isolation if required.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu health officials are closely monitoring the situation in border districts. Measures such as thermal screening, mobile testing units, and awareness campaigns are being intensified to prevent an outbreak. District administrations have also been instructed to remain on standby to impose containment zones if any COVID clusters are detected.
With this sudden surge in cases, experts are reminding the public that the threat of COVID is not completely over. They are urging people to maintain personal hygiene, wear masks in crowded places, and stay vigilant about any flu-like symptoms.
