Rajaji enforced a ban on alcohol in 1937-38 in 4 districts of undivided Chennai province. Rajaji, aware of Karunanidhi’s decision to lift the ban on alcohol in Tamil Nadu in 1971, went to Karunanidhi’s house on Tuesday evening, July 20, 1971, carrying an umbrella in his hand in the pouring rain.
At the time, he pleaded with Karunanidhi that the abolition of the ban would greatly affect future generations. But despite that, the ban was lifted in Tamil Nadu and liquor shops were opened.
Happening today! Liquor stores have been reopened in Tamil Nadu despite public opposition to the spread of the corona virus. Liquor sales crossed Rs 165 crore in the first day on Monday.
