Mason Greenwood and Tyrone Mings Clash During Marseille vs Villa Friendly

A heated confrontation erupted between the teams after Greenwood swung his leg at Amadou Onana from behind during a challenge, prompting Tyrone Mings to step in.

Marseille forward Mason Greenwood and Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings were involved in a scuffle during the pre-season friendly match held at Stade Vélodrome, France, on Saturday.

Greenwood was impressive as Marseille secured a 3-1 victory over the Premier League side, scoring a goal and assisting one of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s two strikes.

Marseille were comfortably leading against Unai Emery’s team when tensions flared after Greenwood delivered a late challenge from behind on Onana. Onana confronted Greenwood, and the two pushed each other before Mings intervened.

Mings grabbed the former Manchester United player aggressively, leaving Greenwood’s jersey torn in the fracas.

Despite the altercation, Greenwood had the final say as Marseille outplayed their opponents with a clinical performance under coach Roberto De Zerbi.

Marseille concluded the 2024/25 Ligue 1 season in second place with 65 points from 34 matches, finishing just behind champions PSG, who also won their first UEFA Champions League title under Luis Enrique. PSG’s European success mirrored Marseille’s own prestigious triumph in previous years.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa ended the English Premier League season in sixth place with 66 points, securing qualification for the UEFA Europa League. They narrowly missed out on a Champions League spot despite being contenders for much of the campaign.
